Trouble In Paradise

Apparently I left my brain at the airport and like most guys in Pattaya, I've been thinking with something else..
Trouble in paradise ..literally. This place is awesome but the girls are fucking crazy! In a recent entry, I mentioned how I moved in with one of the local showgirls. I’d like to say that it seemed like a good idea at the time but it didn’t. I pretty much knew this was coming, hence the title of the entry – “living with a showgirl, a recipe for drama?” Well, it took a little over 2 weeks but last night that “recipe” manifested itself into a big plate of bullshit.

I’ll backtrack a little. The girl I was staying with goes back and fourth from Pattaya to Issan quite frequently as she has to take her dad to the hospital in her hometown. It’s the typical Thai sob-story. The girl is a “victim of circumstance” as she’s forced to provide for her family via sketchy, unconventional methods (use your imagination) since working at the local 7-11 doesn’t pay near enough.

She has this guy and apparently he thinks that he’s her boyfriend. He sends her money all the time and in return, he gets about 10 minutes of generic (what you eat? how was your day?) conversation via collect call from her every night. Meanwhile, there’s usually some guy in the bed next to her that’s told to “be quiet” until she’s off the phone. Sounds like a good investment on his part, doesn’t it?

Anyway, it was the 18th of September and she was talking to her “boyfriend”. A brief break in the conversation arose and she pounced on the opportunity to ask the ever-so-sly question – “can you send me money?” A question that – judging by her collection of western union branded apparel – has been asked many times. However, this time he shot down her request. After all, he had just sent her 10,000 baht (about 300 US) a week before. Once he denied the request, the call ended pretty quick. I mean, how dare he not send her money. Who does this guy think he is? *sarcasm*

Here’s where it gets embarrassing, for me! Once he refused to send her the cash, I knew I was the next target since she had planned to rent a car and go to her home the next day. I snuck out onto the balcony to get some air and I psyched myself up to shoot her down. “Fuck that shit, I’m not giving her any money” .. I told myself. I went back in and about an hour past before the speech started.

“I only have 1 dad” “ I have many friends here but nobody will help me” .. “I think you know what I’m going to ask”. “NOOOO!” I said (as rehearsed on the balcony). Surprisingly, she was very accepting of my refusal. I laid on the bed pissed off that she would put me in that situation and she started to get ready to go out. While she was pulling a low-cut shirt over her silicone “money makers”, she started coughing uncontrollably.

So, here this girl was ..tired, sick and about to go wonder the streets to find a “customer” for the night so she could take her sick dad to the hospital the following day. Maybe I’m too nice or maybe I’m just stupid – but it got to me. As she was about to leave, I walked to the front door, grabbed her, told her to take off her shoes and go back to bed. The next morning I found myself at the ATM pulling out 15,000 baht (almost 500US) for her dads hospital bills.

As I handed her the stack of 1000 baht bills, I emphasised the fact that this was nothing more than a loan and that I expected to be fully compensated for the money. “I’ll pay you back, I promise” she said. I had a bad feeling about it right from the start and I know now that I should have trusted my initial instinct (as you always should).

So here I am today, on October 2nd and I still haven’t seen 20 baht of the 15,000 that I lent to her. And to make matters worse, this chick storms around the small apartment bitching about every little thing. Forget Quinton Jackson, this girl is the real “Rampage”. Last night I was sick of getting bitched at for seemingly breathing so I basically told her that I just wanted my money so I could bounce. After all, this is Pattaya. A city where a man doesn’t have to put up with the bitching and nagging. It’s much easier to switch-up-girls than it is to get into dragged out arguments over stupid shit.

When I requested the cash, all hell broke loose. Apparently, by her logic, requesting money that’s owed to you is out of line and that “I only care about myself”. Was this girl fucking serious? We argued back and fourth and what happened next made me convinced that this girl has some psychological issues that would rival even “Fon” in a “win a straight-jacket” competition.

She took the remote control for the television, said “now your money is all I think about”, smacked the remote against her forehead about 3 times, then whipped it against the wall. She then proceeded to run to the bathroom and sit in the bathtub for about 2 hours. I mean, that’s a normal stress reliever, isn’t it? Having a nice long bath, I’m sure it’s very relaxing. Only in this case, the tub remained empty and she remained fully clothed.

Needless today, as soon as the rental office opened today, I found my own room. I got my new key and went back to pack up my shit. As I was doing so, we got into another argument over the money and for a second, she tried to pull the “I’m not paying you back” routine.

Can’t Hustle A Hustler

Sure it was stupid to lend her my money but I’m not dumb enough to do so without getting any sort of reassurance that I’ll get it back. When she tried to test the waters by saying she wasn’t going to pay me back, I gave her a few options. Let me rephrase, I gave her 1 option and a few reasons why she should take it.

The Option
Pay me back in 1 week.

The Reasons
1) I had the foresight to predict this situation so I pulled her “boyfriends” number out of her cell phone while she was in the shower. You know, the same “boyfriend” that sends her money all the time. I told her that if I didn’t get my money, I’d call him up and tell him everything. Not only that, I have all sorts of photos that she sent me (taken by another man) that I could always forward to him if he needed proof.

2) I just used this one as a scare tactic, I wouldn’t actually do it. On Saturday night she stumbled into the room all drunk and high. The next day she asked me to urinate into an empty water bottle in case the police came to her bar to randomly make the girls take a drug test. Thailand is different from the States or Canada in the sense that you don’t have to have possession of the drugs to get charged for drug use. The cops can just randomly make you take a urine test as they see fit and if you get busted, the penalties can be pretty serious (if you don’t have money to pay your way out of it). Anyway, I told her that if she didn’t pay me then I would call the cops, tell them that she jacked my money and spent it on drugs. Thus, she would be tested and as she believes, she’d get busted. Truth is, ecstasy is only detectable for 4-6 days after usage but I highly doubt she’ll think to hit up Google for that information.

3) I made sure to get her admitting that she owes me the money through SMS (text message) conversation. I have the whole conversation saved so at least I’ll have some sort of “proof” that the money was indeed a loan.

So, what’s the morale of the story?

As a wise man once said..

Don’t lend $500 dollars of your hard earned money to a drug-addicted prostitute.

So, leave some comments and let me know if you think I’ll get the money back or not. We’ll make it a little poll. And of course, I’ll keep you updated..

Coming Soon

In about a week or so, there’s a fight night here in Pattaya and the fight card features about 3-4 cast members of the Contender Asia. I’ll be going with Rosalie (the owner of Scorpion Gym) as she’s fighting on the card as well. Hopefully I’ll get some cool footage and perhaps a couple of exclusive interviews with the fighters.

THINKING OF GOING TO THAILAND TO TRAIN?

I’ve developed a 70 page guide that profiles everything you need to know about training in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya. In the manual, I discuss the visa issues, the Muay Thai camps, the different areas, the transportation, the food, the culture and customs, the girls, the scams, the safety issues and most importantly, how to save a ton of cash along the way!

Sorry bud, I have my doubts… I’m betting you get some back but it doesn’t sound like she has that kind of cash laying around or any desire to get it for you.

My vote: I’ll say you get about half back

  2. The Ghost on October 2nd, 2008 10:23 am

Sorry man, she was hot. But I think everyone but you knew this would be how it ended. Sent you an e-mail.

  3. Bowen on October 2nd, 2008 10:48 am

Dude it’s a shame you gave her the cash in the first place but at least your blackmail is pretty good so fingers crossed you get around half of it back (I really can’t see you get the whole lot)!
Awesome journal by the way, I check it a lot as I’m heading to Phuket in January for 3 months.

    Good luck!

  4. Cam on October 2nd, 2008 11:38 am

Dude…you know it’s bad when you’re telling YOURSELF “I told you so” :P

I think you’ll get half of it back, and she’ll try to get back together with you and say you’ll get the other half if you move back in or something.

This is the ONLY thing I warn people about who are going to Thailand – the girls are freeking crazy. Especially bar girls. Chalk this one up to experience man, but you might just have to cut your losses and make a clean break.

  5. Tariq on October 2nd, 2008 12:08 pm

Why did you go to Thailand? To train or fuck around like this? No, you’re not getting the money back. What you should do if you want to actually learn something while you’re over there is move into a gym so you can focus entirely on training and get rid of all the other distractions, then when you have a month left just rent an apartment and party your little heart out. Honestly man, I love reading your training blogs and learning about the gyms over there, but if half your posts are about girls I feel like you’re wasting a huge opportunity to better yourself as a person and as a fighter. It seems like you have a lot of respect for the Thais but not enough to live like them while you are over there, that is a shame, and it is not the real experience that one should get from training in Thailand.

  6. CP on October 2nd, 2008 12:28 pm

Let me start off by saying that you seem like a cool guy. I enjoy your writing. And I am slightly jealous of your kick-ass experience.

That said, you have lost your mind??? *grin*
Dude, does anyone even need to hold up a mirror here and ask you “How smart is it to lend a drug-using prostitute money?”
That would be bad enough, but then trying to blackmail her into paying you back??? I am asking this with a huge smile on my face… this is the best entry so far. Seriously.

Bro, I am 6’2 & 250lbs… I train BJJ & boxing 4 times a week. And I tend to be a willful bastard hardass at times. But even I would not cross a bargirl. She is going to know a lot more people than you. And even great training in MT won’t keep you from a beat-down when its 6 or 8 on 1. Thai’s arent as big us, or as well trained, but they make up for it in numbers. Your teerak probably knows more guys than you can count (including people involved in the drug trade in a country where that caries a life sentence) and it’ll be cheaper to pay for them to put you in a hospital than to pay you back.

Maybe you’ll get lucky and she’ll go bang a few foreigners and make enough to pay you back a small part of what she owes, then make some pretense about paying the rest later. Maybe.

We all pay for what we learn, bro. Either we pay for a class, or we pay for the experience a of a mistake, but either way we’re gonna pay. $500 isnt that bad of a price to learn a really important lesson…

Wishin ya the best, man. Keep posting…

    Tariq,

I think you envision me out drinking and partying every night. I’ve gone out drinking once in the past month and I train everyday with the exception of Sunday. I am in Thailand for almost a year and I’ll be going EVERYWHERE. Phuket, Pattaya, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and yes, plenty of remote areas where there will be nothing to do BUT train. Perhaps you missed the entry where I went to Issan.

I didn’t come here for the girls or the prostitution. I’ve never paid for sex in my life. However, when you come to a foreign country alone, you crave company. I’m not exactly going to approach random dudes on the street and pursue a friendship with them. It’s much easier to go to the bar, buy a couple lady drinks and talk to some of the girls.

Sure, I can train, eat and sleep.. but if I did that, every entry would look something like this ..

    Today I woke up
    Ran
    Shadowboxed
    Skipped
    Did 5 rounds of padwork
    Did some sparring
    Kneed the bag 200 times

Ate, slept then did it all over again in the afternoon..

So, as for my priorities while I’m here. Training is important but also, it’d like to make make these entries as entertaining as possible for the readers.
If not for the blog, would I put myself in some of the situations that I do? Most likely not. Is living with a showgirl usually a good idea? No way! But I figured it would be a whole lot more entertaining than staying in my room alone every night.

As for living like a Thai? As mentioned above, I went to Issan. Not very many foreigners do that. I’ll be training at Por Pramuk, which is in complete isolation as well as True Bee gym, which is believe is a few hours from Chaing Mai in an area called “Pai”.

Right now however, I’m in Pattaya. There’s a lot of girls here so naturally, the entries are influenced by my environment.

    1. It’s a 100% chance that you will NEVER see any of your money again.

    2. Be VERY careful when threatening her. She’s a prostitute. That means she has a pimp, or pimps. One phone call and you’ll be walking home one night only to be jumped by 5 guys with crowbars. I’m not kidding. I’m a farang who has lived in Thailand for years now. Trust me, I’ve seen this happen too many times. I seen one farang get his entire face smashed in with lead pipes and crowbars, right in the middle of one of the busiest streets in Phuket, all because of a bargirl. No one did anything. Not even the police. Why? Because the guys who jumped him were a part of the gang who rang the local prostitution ring. I seriously though this guy was dead, with his head smashed in, bleeding like a stuck pig in the middle of a busy street.

It’s all fun and games to have interesting things like this to write in your blog. But it’s not so much fun when your all alone in a dark Thai alley surrounded by a bunch of guys who do not care one bit about you living or dying, because they know whatever they do to you, they will get away with it.

Think I’m kidding? A Canadian guy was shot dead in the face, for no apparent reason other then a minor argument, not even a year ago here in Thailand. Who shot him? An Thai cop. Don’t believe me? Google it. The Canadian and Thai government are still investigating the murder. And the cop is currently still walking the streets free. Word is he’ll never be convicted.

If a COP is willing to do that to to foreigner, what do you think a poor, young Thai gangster with something to prove to hie peers, is willing to do to you?

To be truthful, I’m actually surprised you haven’t got the living shit beat out of you, or your kneecaps crowbarred, yet. All the Muay Thai, MMA, or BJJ you know won’t save you from what these gangsters or dirty cops will do to you.

Please be safe, my friend. This is from a fellow martial artist, a fellow Thailand traveller, and a fellow Canadian.

    Hey William,

Just curious, when are you planning on going down to Phuket? I’m going to be there for the majority of November to train, most likely at Sinbi. Anyway, great posts so far and its too bad about the $500. I could say it was a dumb move, but its hard to know what you would do being put in that situation. Hit me up on facebook:

You need to go the book shop, I think there is one at second road and central if memory serves me. The book is called Money #1, it is essential if you are going to be chilling in Pattaya. Even though you’ve probably learned enough the hard way, it will be right up your alley and a good read for you either way.
    cheers.

  15. Cody on October 3rd, 2008 12:21 am

    Tariq,

After reading your post a couple of times, i have concluded that you must hop on a plane ASAP and get to Thailand so you can lose your virginity. Dont worry, the girls there will sleep with anybody. I hear they also have a revolutionary surgery to help remove the stick from your ass.

However, you may have a slight problem. Since you will be so busy respecting the Thais by sleeping on the floor in the gym, it may be hard for you to actually get laid with so many people around. Could you possibly take a day off from respecting the Thais and get a hotel room?

  16. Cody on October 3rd, 2008 12:27 am

“To be truthful, I’m actually surprised you haven’t got the living shit beat out of you, or your kneecaps crowbarred, yet. All the Muay Thai, MMA, or BJJ you know won’t save you from what these gangsters or dirty cops will do to you.”

Some of you guys crack me up. Not every bargirl has a pimp and a bunch of gangsters willing to crowbar a farang over something like this. How many times a day do you think this same situation happens in Thailand and not shit comes of it?

I bet you think all gringoes get robbed walking down the street in Rio also dont ya?

“Think I’m kidding? A Canadian guy was shot dead in the face, for no apparent reason other then a minor argument, not even a year ago here in Thailand. Who shot him? An Thai cop”

Did you hear about that girl that got kidnapped and murderd in Aruba by three local boys and the cops let them go? They are still free running around. Dont believe me? Google it.

  17. admin on October 3rd, 2008 12:33 am

    Anthony,

Since a lot of these bargirl-ordered horror stories people keep posting are sort of creeping me out .. haha .. I think I’ll be in Phuket really, really soon. I was planning on going at the end of the month but I think I’ll leave Pattaya in a little over a week. I’ll stay in Bangkok for a few days, train at Fairtex and Kaewsamrit, then head down and get one of the Thai-style bungalows at Tiger.

You’re there in November? That’s awesome, I’ll be there as well. We should link up..

  18. CP on October 3rd, 2008 2:32 am

Odds are, if she is working in a business, she does not have a pimp. Hell, odds are if you’re staying with her (meaning she has her own place), its very unlikely she has a pimp.
She will have a mamasan though. And the business and the mamasan both make money from her being there to attract & service foreigners. If you go to the cops over her drug use, and she gets put in jail, the business and the mamasan lose money. So, although there isnt likely a pimp in the picture, there are people that profit from her doing her work… if you screw with that profit, you will get hurt.
Additionally, all bargirls will have relatives or friends or friends of their relatives, etc… it’s their country, bro, they’re going to know a lot of people. Her asking some young guys who want to feel tough by beating up the big foreign fighter… maybe even offering to pay them $100 (a lot of money over there), would be no problem what so ever for her. I’ve read too many stories of farangs who confronted their “girlfriends” after sending them money for a year, thinking a marriage was in the making, only to find she’d never left the bar and was still shagging 2 or 3 guys a day. These dumbasses should have known better, but they ignored the concept of “face” and confronted these girls in public and embarrassed them. Although gunshot wounds are rare, beatings with bars and bats are more common than you might imagine. And when you’re the farang being beaten by a group of Thai’s, no one is going to stop it. No one.
My advice? Apologize to your… well, whatever she is… tell her you were just mad and tired from training and that you are sure she will pay you back when she can. This will allow her to save face, feel unthreatened by you, and likely call off the dogs of war. Then just quietly leave when the time is right.
I’m guessing you’re getting side benefits by living there. Count it as a $500 “long time” that lasted way past the normal. And if you’re leaving in a week, make this last week count… get your mileage out of the deal, ya know? Then move on with a smile on your face, knowing it was $500 lesson that you grew from yet found a way to enjoy as well…

    Best of luck. Keep posting…

Well, hate to pile on here…but this probably will not end well. You money is gone. Best bet is to just walk away from this mess. I assume you already left her – and by now you realize you will not get any money back. So, just do not contact her or go where she works/hangs out. Forget about it. The great thing about being in southeast Asia is that every day there is a new experience – and you just got to experience getting ripped off. Just do not let it happen again, lol.

I have to admit I seen this coming when you blogged about moving in with a show girl. I have been in Thailand many times for business and dated non-nightlife Thai ladies and even they were a bit strange. I would never have lived with any of them – and they were all well educated, business professionals. But like I said before – enjoy all the experiences you are having – soon enough you will be back in your boring western country fondly remembering all the adventures (and mis-adventures) you got into in Thailand.

  20. kevin on October 3rd, 2008 11:34 am

bad idea, I think she could knows some “bad guy”…. I mean if she is in drugs way, maybe she knows some criminals guys.. if she feels too under preasure, she can do something crazy, such as send to you a “friend” to pay bills…..so be careful, I dont want to read a post saying ” We will miss you Admin”…

… returning in muay thai way… what do you thin abour Por. Pramuk Gym?
and.. do you know any good gym with Muay thai and MMA or BJJ?

  21. pantherhare on October 3rd, 2008 1:16 pm

She most likely is not going back and forth to Issan for her sick father and I can almost guarantee that the 500 bucks isn’t going towards any medical bills.

These girls know they have a finite period of time in their line of business, so their goal is to earn as much retirement money as possible. Accordingly, trying to get your money back from her will be like trying to get blood from a stone. You won’t see the money and could possible make things a lot worse.

CP said it best. Apologize, let the money issue slide, and enjoy your time with her. I know 500 bucks is a bitter pill to swallow, especially if you have limited funds that you projected to last you a year in Thailand, but the chances of you getting any money back is slim to none and are outweighed by the very real chance of more headache.

  22. Tariq on October 3rd, 2008 1:28 pm

Alright alright I was just a little frustrated from this last post..because from what we see all the way over here you don’t seem to learn your lesson from these bargirls, with that said, i LOVE your blog, and i have a tremendous amount of respect for you for going over there and giving us so much feedback about what it’s like. Would I like to know what it’s like to live in a gym and do nothing but train train train? Yes. But those are my priorities and you have your own and I respect that.

I don’t know what it’s like to be alone in a foreign country, a couple of people that I know have trained in Thailand and have had similiar experiences to yours, but they also had rented apartments outside of the gym. When I go, I want to try to get the full experience, eat sleep and train at the gym, honestly I think I would be much less lonely that way. Anyway, keep up your contributions man, it is helping me a lot as I make plans to travel there next year!

PS any chance you will be checking out the Por Pramuk camp or perhaps some more rural camps?

  23. Tariq on October 3rd, 2008 1:32 pm

Cody, sorry man I don’t need to go to third world countries to get laid and party, that’s what home is for, I travel to get something different.

great blog entry! been following your antics for a couple months now.

anyways, as everyone said above…u probably won’t get your money back. there is a reason why her “friends” refused to lend her any money. they knew they wouldn’t get it back!

great blackmailing on your part!! since you were living together with her, she probably doesn’t have a thai boyfriend, husband, or pimp…so i wouldn’t be too worried about getting beat up. then again, pattaya is a crazy place…you never know!!

you say you have never paid for sex in your life. What do you think the $500 was? You paid to get fucked by a bar girl, your problem is that you don’t know it yet and you don’t have the good sense to walk away before it costs you more. It doesn’t matter what YOU think, SHE gets paid to have sex, you had sex with her, you gave her $500. Even if she agreed it was a loan at the time, SHE thinks that you owe the money to her even if she has not vocalized it.

  29. admin on October 10th, 2008 6:23 am

    BTM,

You make an excellent point. Had I been fucking her, then naturally (considering her profession), she would be right to assume that the $500 was payment for her “services”.

Perhaps this is my fault for not making it clear. I was NOT fucking her. We were living together as “friends”. She could do what she wanted (as I wasn’t paying her) and I could do what I wanted. The only rule we had was that she wouldn’t take guys back to the room and I wouldn’t take girls back.

If I had been fucking her, not only would that have caused a lot more drama, but I knew that each time I did, she would make a mental note and deduct X-amount of dollars from what she owed me. Truthfully, it’s a lot easier for me to jerk off than it is for me to earn 500 dollars. I’d rather have the money …

When are you coming to Pai? That should be your next stop. Chiang Mai and then Pai.

    Sumchai,

I’m trying to time things out based on the weather. Right now, and over the last couple months it rains a lot in Phuket but it’s been sunny here in Pattaya. Phuket will soon clear as I’m going there on Wednesday and I’ll be there when the weather is at it’s best. After the new year, that’s when I’ll likely head up to Chaing Mai and Pai as Southern Thailand as at it’s hottest and most uncomfortable in March, April etc. while Chaing Mai is a lot cooler.

hey man i love your site.. your friend michael told me you were looking for a new way to earn some extra income online.

i own an awesome website where you can make money online..most our users are making like 20-50 bucks a day.. with minimal work.. its pretty simple to do.. its actually so easy to do you won’t believe ill actually pay you to do it.. and its 100% free to sign up and try.

another positive about my site unlike all the other sites.. i will pay you out daily.. so you earn 5 bucks in the first 5 minutes you work on my site.. request a payout and i will pay you out right then.. i guarantee no other sites like mine will pay out daily multiple times..

i’d be glad to help you.. if you sign up..
